What to Expect in a Steadfast Agreement

Our Standard

Transparency, accountability, and lifelong responsibility — clearly explained before a placement ever occurs.

Our Philosophy on Agreements

At Steadfast Standard Schnauzers, our contracts are designed to protect:

Our agreements are not adversarial. They exist to ensure that every Steadfast dog has a stable, responsible future — and that expectations are understood before a placement ever occurs.

The Values We Live By

What Our Contracts Generally Cover

While each agreement is tailored to the specific placement (companion, show, working, or breeding prospect), buyers can expect the following themes to be present.

Clear Ownership & Responsibility

Defines roles & decision-making

  • Legal ownership at each stage
  • Responsibility for daily care, training, and expenses
  • Decision authority for health, breeding, and registration

Designed to prevent confusion and protect the dog’s best interests.

Lifetime Responsibility & Return Policy

A commitment for life

  • Every Steadfast dog remains our responsibility for life
  • If an owner can’t keep the dog, return to Steadfast (or rehome with our involvement)
  • Ensures no Steadfast dog ends up in a shelter or unsuitable situation

This protects the dog first—always.

Health, Care & Veterinary Standards

Reasonable, responsible care

  • Routine veterinary care and preventive health
  • Appropriate nutrition and physical conditioning
  • Prompt communication if serious health issues arise

We don’t require perfection—we require responsible stewardship.

Breeding & Reproductive Expectations

When applicable to the placement

  • Conditions that must be met before breeding occurs
  • Required health testing and evaluations
  • Limits on number and timing of litters

Breeding is never assumed—it’s earned through health, maturity, and suitability.

Training, Development & Working Potential

Progress over pressure

  • Reasonable efforts toward training, sport, or show development
  • Collaboration on evaluation and progress
  • Flexibility if the dog is better suited to a different role

Our goal is appropriate placement—not forcing outcomes.

Registration, Naming & Representation

Protects pedigree integrity

  • Registry requirements (as applicable)
  • Kennel name usage and naming conventions (where relevant)
  • Accuracy in how the dog is represented publicly

This protects both the dog’s lineage and the integrity of our program.

Communication & Cooperation

Good-faith problem solving

  • Open communication and timely updates
  • Respectful collaboration when questions arise
  • Support-oriented guidance rather than conflict

Most issues are resolved through conversation, not enforcement.

Accountability, Breach & Remedies

Structure that protects the dog

  • Defines serious violations and correction steps when possible
  • Clarifies remedies if obligations are intentionally ignored
  • Sets expectations for responsible follow-through

These clauses exist to protect the dog—not to intimidate responsible owners.

Every breeder–owner relationship is a partnership. While we strive to place our dogs thoughtfully and responsibly, we also recognize that our approach is not the right fit for everyone.

Steadfast May Be a Good Fit If…

We May Be a Good Fit If…

Neither approach is right or wrong — they are simply different. We believe the best placements happen when expectations are aligned from the beginning.

Final Note to Prospective Owners

Our agreements are thorough because we are intentional.

This approach works best for people who:

We encourage prospective owners to ask questions early and to review agreements carefully before committing to a Steadfast dog.
